We are all frightened by the word cancer. We all fear the unknown. With the diagnosis of cancer, you find yourself entering a new and confusing world. You may feel that you no longer are in control of your own body — that it has betrayed you.
Some of our fears are not easy to put into words, even with those people we trust the most. But the more questions we ask about treatment, side effects, and options available, the more we fight those fears and gain back some control.
Patients who prepare for chemotherapy by asking questions about what they should expect are better able to handle the physical and emotional aspects of treatment. Gather information. Talk to others who have been through the experience. Everyone's cancer story is unique to them, but their stories can bring hope and encouragement.
Don't be afraid to speak to your doctor or nurse about concerns you have. Set goals for yourself. And most importantly, be an active participant in how you are being cared for.
A good place to start being an active participant is by developing a chemotherapy plan.
