A chemotherapy plan

What is it?

A chemotherapy plan will guide you through your chemotherapy treatment. It describes the details of your specific chemotherapy protocol or regimen. It will outline your chemotherapy schedule and let you know what to expect with your treatments.

How do I develop a chemotherapy plan?

Before you begin chemotherapy, your doctor and oncology nurse will work with you to develop a chemotherapy plan.

A good chemotherapy plan will include:

  • a schedule of your treatment
  • a list of the types and amounts of drugs you'll receive
  • a description of the possible physical and emotional side effects
  • strategies to avoid or manage side effects
  • flexible and realistic goals
  • a list of resources that provide free information and support

Keeping your treatment on track will be a team effort. Your healthcare team might consist of a surgeon, a radiation specialist, a medical oncologist (a physician who specializes in giving chemotherapy), and an oncology nurse. Other advisors are available as needed. These may include a dietician, a social worker, psychologist, and others. All are specifically trained to assist patients with cancer.

Here are some tips on working well with your medical support team:

  • Your oncology nurse is one of your most important resources during chemotherapy. Think of him or her as your personal "coach." Tell your nurse anything and everything that concerns you.
  • Don't be shy about asking your oncology doctor questions. Your doctor will appreciate your interest and involvement in your care.
  • Write a list of questions before each doctor's visit, and tell your doctor right away that you have questions.
  • Keep a journal on how you feel between treatments. Share your observations with your doctor and/or nurse.

There are a few other practical steps you may need to take before your treatment. Find out more about preparing for your chemotherapy treatment.
