Where Will I Receive Chemotherapy?
cancer, you find yourself
entering a new and
confusing world.
Thee type of treatment you need will determine where you receive your chemotherapy. Chemotherapy medications can be given three different ways: intravenously (into a vein), by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection (a shot into the muscle or under the skin), or orally (by mouth). The method of treatment will depend on the type of cancer you have.
So you may receive your treatment in a hospital, clinic, doctor's office, or at home.
When chemotherapy is given through intravenous injection (IV) by dripping medicine through a tube into a vein, you will likely receive this sitting in a comfortable chair at the hospital or clinic, but it may also be possible to receive it at home. When chemotherapy is provided by injection with a needle and a syringe, you may receive this in your doctor's office or a clinic.
Oral chemotherapy, or therapy that can be taken by mouth, is available in pill, capsule or liquid forms. This type of treatment allows you to take it at home or at work. Of course, even when taking your chemotherapy at home, you will need to see your doctor for regular visits.
Your doctor will check the tumour's response and monitor it for changes.
Knowing the details of your chemotherapy treatment is important. Find out more about the frequency of your treatment, how it works and why some people experience side effects.
