Talking To Your Doctor
cancer, you find yourself
entering a new and
confusing world.
Communicating with your doctor.
Almost everyone who has been told they have cancer finds it difficult to express how they feel or to talk about what is going on. You may find it awkward, uncomfortable, embarrassing or painful.
Even though you may find it difficult to talk to your healthcare team and your family, talking to your doctor is still a good place to start. Your doctor and healthcare professionals are there to guide you and answer your questions. It may be just as hard to talk to family and friends as it is to talk to your doctor, nurse and other healthcare professionals. You may wonder, why bother if it is so difficult? There are many things to gain by communicating with others. You can get the support and information you need, and talking to your doctor can help you feel more in control of your treatment.
Making a list of questions before your doctor's appointment can be a helpful way to keep track of everything that is on your mind. Think of the questions that are top of mind or deal with your biggest concerns. Taking a friend with you to an appointment can also help. They may be able to help you keep track of the questions you have. While you may have lots of questions for your doctor, try not to be overwhelmed or to expect to remember everything your doctor tells you at the time of your appointment. You will have other chances to ask about your treatment and discuss it with either your doctor or healthcare team.
Your healthcare team can be your best source of information about your treatment. Find out more about how to talk to your team.
