Step 1: Know what side effects to expect

During chemotherapy, there is a chance that you will experience some side effects. The side effects you may experience depend on your type of chemotherapy, number of treatment cycles, type of cancer and individual factors (e.g., age, overall health). Side effects also vary in terms of:

  • How seriously they affect your body
  • When they occur
  • How long they last

Common side effects may include:

  • Low white blood cell count (neutropenia)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Mouth sores (mucositis)
  • Fatigue
  • Sexual dysfunction
